Maltese, whose closest languages are Maghrebi Arabic, Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian, is the only Semitic language which is written in Roman alphabet. Italian, too, is widely spoken among the younger generation, particularly due to the television programs which are transmitted from nearby Italy.
